Yes — niacinamide and vitamin C safely layer, despite the internet myth. The old belief came from 1960s lab tests on niacin (different molecule). Modern niacinamide is stable with vitamin C at skincare concentrations. Many top products combine them.
The most persistent skincare myth. Here’s why you can ignore it.
Where the myth started
The myth originated from 1960s lab tests using nicotinic acid (niacin) + ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in heat and extreme conditions. They formed niacin — a flushing compound. But skincare uses niacinamide, a different molecule. Under normal skin pH and temperature, no conversion occurs.
The science:
- Niacinamide ≠ niacin
- Skin pH (4.5-5.5) doesn’t trigger conversion
- Room temperature doesn’t either
- Multiple modern products combine them successfully
Products that prove the combination works
Products explicitly combining niacinamide + vitamin C:
- Naturium Vitamin C Complex (both in one serum)
- Paula’s Choice C15 Booster (niacinamide + vitamin C)
- Olehenriksen Truth Serum (vitamin C + niacinamide)
If they “canceled out,” these products wouldn’t exist.
How to layer
Layer order: cleanse → vitamin C → niacinamide → moisturizer. Or use a combo product. The only consideration is potential flushing in very sensitive skin (rare at 10% niacinamide or below).
