Can You Use Vitamin C With AHA? The Timing Guide
Vitamin C and AHA both lower skin pH. Here's how to layer them without over-exfoliation or reduced efficacy.

Use AM/PM split: vitamin C in the morning, AHA in the evening 2-3x weekly. Same-time layering is safe but intensifies irritation. Never combine daily — both are exfoliating-adjacent and too much can damage the barrier.
Both are acidic actives. Layer them wrong and you’ll regret it.
Why the split matters
Vitamin C at 15% L-ascorbic is pH 2.5-3.5. AHA at 5-10% is similarly acidic. Same-time layering doesn’t neutralize either, but doubles the acid exposure to skin — causing stinging and over-exfoliation. The AM/PM split gives the barrier recovery time.
The correct routine
Morning:
- Cleanse
- Vitamin C serum (acidic actives during day = photoprotection)
- Moisturizer
- SPF 30+
Evening (2-3x weekly):
- Cleanse
- AHA (glycolic or lactic)
- Moisturizer (no further actives)
Other evenings: Retinoid + moisturizer
