How Much Sunscreen Do You Actually Need? (With Calculator)

You're probably using half of what you should — which means SPF 30 becomes SPF 5. Here's the actual amount and how to tell if you're on track.

The short answer

For face and neck: a quarter-teaspoon (1.25ml), or two finger-lengths of product. For full body: 1 fl oz (30ml) — about the size of a shot glass. Most people use 25-50% of this.

The dirty secret of sunscreen is this: the SPF number on the bottle assumes you’re applying 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. Almost nobody does. Which means your real SPF is way lower than the label.

Here’s how to actually dose it.

The face + neck amount

The short answer

One quarter-teaspoon (1.25ml, or approximately 1/6 fluid ounce) covers the face and neck at the dose used in SPF testing. This is about two finger-lengths of product.

Practical visuals:

  • Two finger-lengths of product (from fingertip to first knuckle, twice)
  • A quarter-teaspoon if you want to measure it properly
  • About the size of a large blueberry in volume

If you’re squeezing out a “pea-sized” amount, you’re at about one-quarter the dose. That turns SPF 30 into SPF 7.

The full body amount

The short answer

For full body coverage (adult, average size), use 1 fluid ounce (30ml) — roughly the size of a shot glass. Apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure.

The FDA amount for a beach day is 1 oz per application. That means a 6-ounce bottle should last six applications. If you’ve had the same tube for a year, you’re not using enough.

What happens when you under-apply

The short answer

SPF protection scales exponentially with dose. Using half the recommended amount of SPF 30 gives you roughly SPF 5-8 — the square root relationship, not linear. Half the product ≠ half the protection.

The math that nobody shares:

  • Full dose SPF 30 = blocks 97% of UVB
  • Half dose SPF 30 = effective SPF ~5-8, blocks ~85%
  • Quarter dose SPF 30 = effective SPF ~2-3, blocks ~65%

The jump from “97% blocked” to “65% blocked” is enormous for daily use.

How often to reapply

The short answer

Reapply every 2 hours in direct sun, immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, and every 4 hours indoors if you’re near windows. One morning application is not enough for anyone outside for more than 2 hours.

Rules of thumb:

  • Outdoor day: every 2 hours, plus after swimming/sweating
  • Office/indoor near windows: midday top-up (11am-12pm)
  • Driving long distance: every 2 hours (car windows block UVB but not UVA)
  • Cloudy day: same schedule — clouds block 20-30% of UV, not 100%

Do I need more sunscreen if I sweat a lot? +

Yes — sweat dilutes and displaces sunscreen. Reapply after any serious sweating session, regardless of the 2-hour rule.

What about spray sunscreen — is that enough? +

Sprays work if you use enough and rub in. Typical sprayed-on amount is about 1/4 of the needed dose. Spray, rub, respray.

Can I use less if I have makeup with SPF? +

Makeup SPF claims are almost always theoretical. You’d need to layer 7+ products at full application each to hit SPF 30. Use sunscreen, then makeup on top.
