Is SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator Worth $178? Real Review

HA5 is the SkinMedica product that gets less attention than TNS Advanced+ but arguably delivers more day-to-day visible benefit. At $178 for 2 oz, it’s premium — but for dehydration and mature skin, it earns the price. Here’s the honest review.

What multi-weight HA actually means

Why molecular weight matters:

• Low molecular weight HA (5-50 kDa): penetrates deeper, hydrates dermal layer
• Medium weight HA (100-500 kDa): middle-layer plumping
• High molecular weight HA (1000-2000 kDa): surface-layer hydration and film-forming

A single-weight HA serum hydrates one layer. Multi-weight formulas hydrate the full skin depth — which is what you actually feel as “plump” versus “surface moist.”

My 8-week test

Baseline (age 42, dehydrated-combination skin, visible dehydration lines on forehead and around eyes):

• Dehydration lines around eyes at rest
• “Tight” skin feeling after cleansing
• Makeup settling into fine lines by 2pm

Week 1:

• Immediate plumping effect (noticed morning of day 1)
• Dehydration lines look slightly softer
• Skin feels hydrated without heaviness

Week 4:

• Dehydration lines around eyes: dramatically softer
• Forehead lines: less visible
• Skin “bounces back” from pressing tests faster

Week 8:

• Full effect visible
• Dehydration lines essentially gone when skin is hydrated
• Makeup sits well all day
• Skin looks “healthy” in a way it hasn’t in years

HA5 doesn’t claim to do anti-aging work in the retinoid sense. What it does is make your skin look more hydrated, plumper, and younger — because dehydration is what makes skin look “aged” more than wrinkles do.

Who this is absolutely worth it for

Worth $178 if:

• You have dehydration lines (fine lines that worsen with dehydration)
• You’re 40+ with mature skin
• You’ve plateaued on cheaper HA serums
• You want serum + moisturizer combined in one step
• You’re in a dry climate or frequently traveling

Skip if:

• You’re under 30 with healthy hydration
• You have very oily skin that doesn’t need extra moisture
• You won’t use it consistently (daily is the minimum for effect)

HA5 vs competitors

vs SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier ($112): H.A. Intensifier is more of a treatment serum (multi-weight HA + proxylane). HA5 is more hydrator-focused (multi-weight HA in a richer base). Both excellent. H.A. Intensifier for pre-makeup plumping; HA5 for deeper overall hydration.

vs Augustinus Bader The Cream ($290): Different actives (TFC8 vs multi-weight HA). HA5 wins on pure hydration; AB wins on signaling. Many people use both.

How to use HA5

• Amount: 2-3 pumps
• Timing: twice daily (morning + night)
• Skin state: apply to damp skin for ~40% better absorption
• Layer order: cleanser → toner → HA5 → moisturizer → SPF (AM) / retinoid (PM)
• With tretinoin: HA5 before tretinoin is a great buffer

One 2-oz bottle at 2-3 pumps twice daily = ~3-4 months. Cost per month: ~$45-60.
