The short answer

AM routine: cleanse → vitamin C → moisturizer → SPF. PM routine: cleanse → retinoid (every 2-3 nights to start) → moisturizer. That’s it. 5 products covers it. Pick budget or premium versions of each based on your wallet.

The simplest skincare template that works. Pick products in each category at your budget tier.

Common mistakes

The short answer

Most beginners over-complicate routines. Three mistakes: layering too many active serums same time (vitamin C + retinol + AHA = irritation), applying retinoid to wet skin (always wait), and skipping SPF because they “don’t go outside” (UV penetrates windows).

Don’t:

  • ❌ Layer vitamin C + retinoid + AHA same routine
  • ❌ Apply retinoid to wet skin
  • ❌ Skip SPF on cloudy/indoor days
  • ❌ Use exfoliating cleanser AND chemical exfoliant
  • ❌ Add new products faster than every 2-3 weeks

Building up the routine

Start with just steps 1, 3, 4 (cleanse, moisturize, SPF) for 2 weeks. Then add retinoid 2x weekly for 2 weeks. Then increase to nightly. Then add vitamin C in morning.

Total ramp time: 6-8 weeks to full routine.

Frequently asked

Do I need all 5 products? +

No — cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF are the minimum. Add retinoid for anti-aging. Add vitamin C for brightening.

Can I use the same products forever? +

Yes. Skincare results come from consistency, not switching products. Stick with what works.

What if I have specific concerns (acne, melasma)? +

Add targeted treatments: salicylic acid for acne, azelaic acid for melasma. They slot into the existing template at the serum step.
